A festival exploring music and sound, Open Ears presents a very eclectic range from new classical music to electroacoustic, musique actuelle and sound installation. This year we are exploring intersections between old and new - Rethink * Rewire * Renew

The focus of all events is the act of listening.

Rethink Rewire Renew

[;;;;;;;;On paper, it looks];;;;;;;; like a dream come true for musicians on the forward fringe of the art, and for people normally frightened of same. No more cloistering in concert halls; no preset definitions of what real music is.
Robert Everett-Green, The Globe and Mail

Performers and performances include:
Two evenings of curated new sounds from the looping bassoon growls of Katherine Young to the haunting dispatches of Bernice to the soulful long-form R&B to the electronics and beats of underground DJ Pursuit Grooves.

Kyle Brenders takes atonal sounds and adds a beat feeling there is no such thing as too much funk.

Sarah Neufeld, member of Arcade Fire, celebrates the February release of her second album, 'The Ridge', an album that will appeal to fans of avant-pop or those interested in the fusion between a centuries-old instrument and the contemporary indie scene.

In 'Dollhouse', internationally renowned dancer/choreographer Bill Coleman inhabits an installation created by celebrated avant-garde composer Gordon Monahan.

In Ame Henderson's 'What We Are Saying',  an open space is filled with chairs, the performers speak and move in a unison where every decision is a group decision but no one knows whats going to happen next. Is being together possible? They dont have an entirely satisfactory answer. Nonetheless, they insist on this question as both the figure and the ground of their pursuit  to express how things are, and how they want things to be different. Navigating the potential of absolute failure, what we are saying illuminates the possibility of leaderless togetherness.

Canadian pianist Vicky Chow has been described as "brilliant" (New York Times) and "one of the new stars of new music" (Los Angeles Times). She has premiered works by a slew of iconic composers - from Steve Reich to Bryce Dessner - and is a member of New York's preeminent Bang on a Can All-Stars.

Conducting the Ether - from Tesla to T-sticks, this concert draws its thrills from the electric ether in these remarkable new and older works for chamber ensemble.   2014 Giller Prize author Sean Michaels will be present to read from his brilliant historical novel Us Conductors setting the scene for the 1928 beginnings of the theremin  the worlds first motion sensor music instrument.

Please note that Yellow Wallpaper on May 26 and the Choreographies of Encounter Workshop on May 28 are affiliate events and not eligible for the Pick 4 Pass.
